Who we are
SO SUSSEX is a family run venture based in Barcombe on the edge of South Downs National Park. We offer a range of different outdoor activities such as guided mountain bike rides, river expeditions, fishing session, guided hikes and mushroom walks as well as woodland activities, community based exploration sessions for schools and bigger events such as Elderflower Fields Festival.
We feel passionate about Sussex and the environment and our aim is that everyone participating in one of our outdoor sessions should enjoy themselves and have fun as well as learning something new and develop their appreciation for the environment and this particular part of the word.
We have created our Schools without Walls Program in order to provide teachers with the opportunity to easily take the children out into their local community, to learn about their neighbourhood and to link this outdoor experience to what they are currently learning. Our sessions are tailored to the requirements of each individual school. The children will take part in outdoor activities as well as visiting buildings or sites of particular interest and meeting prominent local people from different generations. Home made snacks are always provided and sometimes we incorporate cooking over open fire.
All our sessions aimed at school children are geared towards raising confidence and self esteem through providing opportunities to learn about and to do well at activities the child might not have tried before. We strongly believe that bringing children back into the natural environment is empowering in itself and we aim to create learning experiences that live long in the participants’ minds.
All our sessions are bespoke and we are flexible and adaptable when organising the perfect sessions for each school. We work across most of Sussex and all of these sessions are delivered within walking distance of the school in question. Our staff members have clear, current DBS checks and there are always at least one first aid qualified activity leader present at each session. A full written risk assessment is provided prior to the session and risks are continuously assessed throughout the session. SO SUSSEX has worked with East Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove County Council over the past five years and have all policy and procedure documents in place.
